Initially developed for the military and defense applications, the microbolometer uncooled infrared focal plane array (UIRFPA) detectors have been used widely in the industrial areas. At the same time, traditional single-element thermopile and/or pyroelectric detectors are moving up towards small to medium array formats.

It is projected that the availability of low-cost infrared detector array will create a wide range of new applications, such as very low-cost thermography cameras, personal night vision goggles, home security infrared cameras. And with the further reduction of the size, weight and cost of the detector array, it will enter sections of consumer electronics, smart home etc.
